Description
This is an “unofficial” member of the Dead Feminists broadsides series, a small letterpress keepsake done in the style and spirit of the series, designed as a keepsake to commemorate its sister piece, a large 3-foot-by-3-foot steamroller print we created at the 2013 Wayzgoose Festival in Tacoma, WA.
Dome-inatrix has a bit of a story behind it. In the early 1980s, the famous pop artist Andy Warhol proposed to paint his iconic Poppy design on the roof of the Tacoma Dome (incidentally the world’s largest wooden-dome arena). The design was ultimately rejected, but recent public opinion is calling for reconsideration—there is a large movement in Washington to bring the Poppy to completion after all.
In hopes of seeing a rebirth of the Poppy design, this piece is an illustration of the Dome and the Tacoma skyline, with a poppy-like flower in its rightful place. Standing atop the dome is another famous art reference: Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” (a Renaissance painting to which Warhol also paid tribute in the 1980s), presiding over Tacoma’s Renaissance.
The piece was printed by hand (this is not a reproduction!) on an antique Vandercook Universal One press, on archival, 100% rag (cotton) paper, and then hand-painted with watercolor. Each piece is signed and numbered by both artists.
Paper size: 7 x 7 inches
Edition size: 97 prints
Paper has four deckle (torn) edges
Note: because each print is individually hand-painted, please allow for slight differences between the print you receive and the one pictured here.
