Mistaken Identity
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
— Mahatma Gandhi
This is an “unofficial” member of our series, a small letterpress card done in the style and spirit of the series, designed as a keepsake and errata for our 2013 broadside, “Nightsong.” This card was printed in acknowledgement of a typo in the colophon of “Nightsong,” but the sentiment rings true in everyday life, as well.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869 – 1948) is considered the “Father of the Nation” of India. Through his demonstrations of non-violent civil disobedience, he led India to independence from British rule. He also campaigned for mitigating poverty, ending untouchability within the caste system, expanding women’s rights, and building religious unity. The honorific title of “Mahatma” (which translates to “venerable”) was first applied to him in 1914; in India he is also referred to by the endearment “Bapu” (“father” or “papa”).
